FND
Support for Living With Functional Neurological Symptoms
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a neurological condition that affects how the brain and nervous system function. It can cause very real and sometimes significantly disabling symptoms, even when structural scans or other medical investigations do not fully explain what is happening.
FND is not imagined, intentional, or “all in your head.” Symptoms are genuine and can have a significant impact on everyday life.
People with FND may experience
- Functional seizures
- Weakness or changes in movement
- Tremors, spasms, or jerking movements
- Changes in walking or balance
- Speech difficulties
- Sensory changes or numbness
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Cognitive difficulties or "brain fog"
- Pain
- Changes in vision or other sensory experiences
Every person’s experience of FND is different, and symptoms may change or fluctuate over time.
How Can Psychology Help?
At Maple Psychology, we work collaboratively with individuals to understand their unique experiences and identify practical strategies that support their goals.
Therapy may focus on:
- Understanding FND and the nervous system
- Recognising patterns, triggers, and early warning signs
- Developing regulation and grounding strategies
- Managing stress and nervous system overload
- Adjusting to changes in health or functioning
- Managing anxiety or low mood alongside FND
- Building confidence following difficult or frightening symptoms
- Developing pacing and sustainable routines
- Supporting identity and self-esteem
- Navigating school, university, work, and relationships
- Communicating needs and advocating for appropriate support
Living with unpredictable symptoms can be frustrating, frightening, exhausting, and isolating. Some people with FND have also experienced feeling dismissed or misunderstood while trying to find answers.
At Maple Psychology, we approach FND with curiosity, compassion, and respect.
We recognise that your symptoms are real.
Therapy is not about convincing you that nothing is wrong. It is about helping you better understand your nervous system, supporting your psychological wellbeing, developing practical strategies, and helping you participate in the parts of life that are important to you.
Our goal is to work alongside you as part of your broader healthcare team, supporting greater understanding, confidence, and quality of life.
